What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and certain younger individuals with disabilities. If eligible, you’re usually automatically enrolled in Part A and can choose to enroll in Part B.
Part A
Covers inpatient care, skilled nursing facilities, home health care, and hospice.
Part B
Covers outpatient care, doctor’s visits, preventive services, supplies, and ambulance services.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically covers about 80% of costs and has no annual out-of-pocket limit—leaving gaps in coverage.
Medicare advantage (Part C)
Includes Part A & B plus drug coverage (Part D), annual out-of-pocket max, and extras like dental, vision, hearing, OTC, and fitness benefits. Usually low or $0 premiums.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Helps cover copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. Plans F & G are most popular. Higher premiums, fewer surprise costs. Does not include drug or extra benefits.
