Choosing between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when turning 65. I talk to people about this every week here in Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler and the honest answer is that neither plan is better or worse. The right one depends entirely on you. Your health, your doctors, and how you like to use your coverage.

Let me explain.

First, a Quick Reminder About Original Medicare

When you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare, you get Part A (hospital coverage and inpatient care) and Part B (doctor visits and outpatient care). Together these cover roughly 80%. There are deductibles, copays, and no cap on what you could owe out of pocket in a bad year. That last 20% is what both Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are trying to solve. They just do it in different ways.

Medicare Advantage: The All-in-One Option

Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) is offered by private insurance companies. You still have Medicare but it becomes the primary. Instead of using Medicare directly, your coverage runs through the insurance plan.

What do people like about it? They are almost always $0 premiums or very low and they offer the extra benefits we all like to see. Dental, Vision, Hearing, Transportation, Gym membership. It also includes the prescription drug coverage. It’s also worth noting all plans have a Maximum Out-Of-Pocket, meaning you are capped at how much you could spend in a year. (that’s a good thing)

What to be aware of: Provider networks, referrals required for specialists, prior authorization common, out-of-pocket costs.

Best fit for: People who are generally healthy, want lower monthly costs, don’t mind using a network, and want extra benefits like dental and vision included. More often than not I am able to find a plan like this that can fit the needs of an average person.

Medicare Supplement: The Predictability Option

Medicare Supplement plans (also called Medigap) work alongside Original Medicare. Medicare pays first, then your Supplement plan picks up most or all of what’s left.

What do people like about it? You can go to any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, predictable costs, no prior authorization, great for ongoing health needs.

What you should know: A much higher monthly cost ($100–$200), no drug coverage included (more monthly cost depending on plan), medical underwriting if you miss your enrollment window. Generally you won’t have any co-pays or deductibles.

Best fit for: People who want maximum freedom, travel frequently, have ongoing health conditions, or see multiple specialists.

What I See Most in Mesa and the East Valley

Both types of plans are widely available here. Medicare Advantage plans are VERY competitive — strong carrier options with $0 premiums and good networks including Banner and Dignity Health. That said, I work with people every week who go with completely different options and are happy with both.

One Important Thing Most People Don’t Know

When you first turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B, you have a 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment window. During this window, insurance companies cannot deny you a Supplement plan or charge you more because of health conditions. Once that window closes, you may face underwriting if you want to switch.
